American Western Art

The Studio was designed by the Morans in the Romantic Victorian cottage style with strong Queen Anne elements. There are touches of Colonial Revival and Italianate as well. There are approximately ten (10) rooms, with the studio space taking-up the vast majority of the first floor. The exterior color-palette is influenced by the aesthetic movement.

With its collection of paintings, sculpture, and illustrated letters by Charles Marion Russell, The C.M. Russell Museum presents the art, history, and culture of the American West. Russell’s 1900 home and his 1903 studio are open to the public.

This art, history, and anthropology complex interprets the lives of nationally known artist Grace Carpenter Hudson and her ethnologist husband, Dr. John W. Hudson, who both documented the lives of the Pomo peoples. Their Craftsman bungalow and studio, which they named Sun House, is an example of artistic living.

The complex of traditional adobe buildings, the earliest parts of which date back to the 1830s, includes the home and studio of Eanger Irving Couse and two studios of Joseph Henry Sharp. The two were leading painters and members of the Taos Society of Artists (TSA), which they helped found in 1915. The architecture, furnishings, collections, gardens and views here provide unparalleled insight into the artistic life of the Taos art colony.
