Between the ages of 5 to 28 (1898-1921), Charles Burchfield lived in this house with his widowed mother and five siblings. Here he originated his distinctive watercolor style that seems to visualize the vibrations of nature.
Grant Wood lived and worked in here from 1924 to 1935, when he achieved his mature style. Visitors have the opportunity to stand where American Gothic was painted. The building itself was heavily modified by Grant Wood to feature more living space and unexpected but useful design features.
All the rooms in the rambling bungalow of American Regionalist painter, muralist, sculptor, writer, and musician, Thomas Hart Benton, remain virtually as he left them, with his painting tools, supplies, and stretched canvas in the studio.
